Avram Grant happy with Black Stars spell

Outgoing Black Stars head coach, Avram Grant, says he is happy with his two-year spell with the team despite the failure to win any major trophies.

Grant’s contract with the Ghana Football Association will run down this month after leading the team to finish 4th in the just-ended African Nations Cup tournament in Gabon.

He was in charge when Ghana finished 2nd to Cote d’Ivoire in the 2015 edition of the tournament.

“There are a lot of good memories that I will take from the football, the country and the people here but I will not say that there were no problems. Personally, I enjoyed myself. I met players I did not know before when I was in my country. I came for the football.

“We were in one (AFCON) final; our first since 2010 and we wanted to reach another final but we could not. We deserved to win the semi-final (against Cameroon) but we did not and it hurt. But it is football. What else can you do?”

He went on: “But I am happy that I am leaving a good base for the team especially as I took over in the midst of problems with the 2014 World Cup.

“We had to bring in new players to replace those who were aging and these new players became key to the team. I see that the team is of the right age to bring in trophies. We could have done it in the last tournament but that is football for you.”
