Ahead of the Africa Cup of Nation in Gabon, it wasn’t clear how much the Black Stars were going to be paid as winning bonus.
Outgone Youth and Sports Minister who doubles as the Member of Parliament for the people of Odododiodio constituency, Nii Lante Vnaderpuye slashed the winning bonus from $10,000 to $8,000 appealing to the players to be patriotic enough to serve the nation.
This decision by the former GBC worker didn’t go down well with the Ghana Football Association but had no option than to accept it.
It was reported that Isaac Asiamah who is the incoming sports minister met the players in Gabon and the players have finally accepted to receive $5,000 as their winning bonus.
Ahead of the opening group game against Uganda, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Ibrahim Sannie Darra said the team is willing and ready to accept any amount as winning bonus.
Speaking to the Ghanaian press in Gabon, Mr. Asiamah said, “We are going to have a stake holders meeting to discuss payments for all national teams but in the interim we have held a meeting with the players of the national team and they have agreed to a 50% slash in their bonuses.”
“They have understood the situation we are in and also understand that the fans and the general public have spoken. The players understand this.”
