President of the Ghana Football Association, Kwesi Nyantakyie has defended the 26 man provisional squad insisting that the players were selected based on their qualities.
The former Portsmouth manager announced a 26 man provisional squad for a training tour in the United Arab Emirates in a press conference at the GFA Secretariat on Monday January 2.
Many have expressed their concern over the lack of local players who were not able to get into the team.
But reacting to the squad named for the competition, Mr Nyantakyi said the players are selected based on their qualities.
“Black Stars is not a district assembly where things are done based on electoral areas.” According to him [Avram Grant] players were chosen on merit”.
“Every Ghanaian is eligible to play in the team, whether based in Ghana or abroad. Avram Grant chose those he feels are best placed,” he added.
The Black Stars will train at a closed camp in the UAE and play two friendlies as part of their preparations for the tournament.
Ghana have been paired Egypt, Mali and Uganda in Group D.
The competition will kick off on January 14 to February 5.
