Is Ghana FA Benefiting From the Appointment of Avram Grant?

The issue of why the Black Stars head coach Avram Grant is not staying in the country has become a headache to the football fans and the ordinary tax payer.

Avram Grant was appointed as the head coach of the Black Stars on the November 27, 2014 and was able to take Ghana to the finals of the 2015 AFCON staged in Equatorial Guinea but eventually lost on penalties to Cote D’Ivoire.

Grant appointment as the Stars coach was quizzed by many vociferous football administrators and many football pundits but the explanation given by the Ghana Football Association was that Grant has managed many of the top Stars in world football and there is no doubt that he can coach and control the Ghana Black Stars players.

During his unveiling as the Stars coach, he was asked what he is going to do to help improve Ghana football especially the Ghana Premier League and the local coaches. Grant said, “I will make sure that I stays in the country and attend to the various league centres and watch the league. I will be also be organizing workshops for the Ghanaian coaches.” When Grant was appointed, it has only left three months for the 2015 AFCON to start.

After the AFCON in 2015, Avram Grant left for Europe with an excuse of going monitor players but was spotted as a pundit on BT Sports and on Sky Sports whiles the Ghana league was ongoing. This brought many alarming statements from football fans, administrators and renowned football pundits asking the FA if they are careless. Some demanded explanations from the FA why the coach is failing keep his promises.

Ghana splash a whopping amount of $50,000 on the Black Stars head coach but he is nowhere no to be found in the country at the moment.

Ghana had to play a double tie in the 2017 AFCON qualifiers against Mozambique and Mauritius. It took the FA to order Avram Grant to stop whatever he is doing Europe before the he came to start his preparations ahead of the matches. Before the qualification matches Grant was spotted at the Tema Sports Stadium and he witnessed a thrilling game between Inter Allies and Dreams FC which ended 2:2.

After recording an impressive victory against Mozambique at the Accra Sports Stadium, Grant addressing the media in his post-match conference, he was asked why he has failed to stay in the country to monitor the Premier league, Grant said, “if the country will focus on football and stop the bullshit, we can do something better in football.”

Against Mauritius in Port Louis, Ghana failed to perform as it was expected. Asked why he played Dede Ayew as a striker against Mauritius, Grant said, “Ghana lack better strikers and that was why he played Dede as the striker.”

Many Ghanaians called on the FA to cancel his contract because he does not respect his employers. Some FA members tried to defend the statement made the Israeli coach but many football pundits rubbished the statement made by some of the FA members. Some called on the coach personally to apologize to the country. In an interview Accra based Starr FM with Bola Ray, Grant was asked if he will apologize to the country for using such words but he refused to apologize because his statement has been taken out of context.

After all the controversies that mounted on Grant after failing to apologize, he finally confirmed in an interview with Israel radio station that he will not continue to coach Ghana again after 2017 AFCON coming up in Gabon.
Asked if he will extend his contract with Ghana National team, Grant said, “The competitiveness and creativity in training every day of the week is different. There is no doubt that I miss it.” Grant told Israeli radio station 102 FM.

“My contract ends after the African Cup of Nations Championships in Gabon early next year.

“Next year, at the end of my contract, it is possible I will coach a team in England.”

After the successive victory against Mozambique and Mauritius, Sannie Darra who is the Public Relations Officer of the GFA in an interview with Accra based Asempa FM, was questioned on why Avram Grant has failed to honor his promises by staying in the country to monitor our league and organize workshops for the Ghanaian based coaches. Sannie said, “We know he has been doing some monitoring in Europe but he has promised to stay in the country forever in other to monitor the league so he is not returning back to Europe.

In less than a month, Avram Grant left the country and many questions were again asked but the same answer was given by the FA saying he is going to monitor Black Stars players and since then Grant is not back to the Country.

On July 7, 2016, Sannie Darra was on Accra based Happy FM and was asked the same question on when Avram Grant is returning to the country, Sannie said, “Avram Grant will be returning to the country tomorrow July 8.

After making this statement, Avram Grant up to now is not back to the country. The question many people are asking is that, is Avram Grant ready to stay in the country and is the FA ready to tell the ordinary tax payer the truth? Is Avram Grant ready to watch our league after saying we should concentrate and stop the bullshit or there is a miscommunication between the FA and the coach?

Ghana will play Rwanda as their last AFCON 2017 qualifier and nobody at the FA even knows when Avram Grant is coming back from Europe to start preparation against Rwanda or to even to monitor our league.
