Jurgen Klopp has sent Mamadou Sakho home from Liverpool’s pre-season tour.
The Liverpool defender has been cleared to play again after being hit with a temporary ban after an adverse finding in a routine drugs test.
But he is currently struggling with an ankle injury and will miss the start of the season.
And Reds boss Klopp has decided he must continue his rehabilitation back home at Liverpool’s training ground, despite travelling to California for the club’s pre-season tour.
It is not known if it is a disciplinary measure from Klopp, with Liverpool declining to comment further on the matter. But it is clear the manager has made the decision on the French defender, and that could raise questions about his future.
Sakho had to sit out the last few weeks of last season after being charged with the doping offence and missed the Reds’ Europa League final loss to Sevilla and Euro 2016.
The Frenchman’s absence comes after Klopp was left short at the back this summer following an injury to Joe Gomez and the departures of Martin Skrtel and Kolo Toure.
That has meant the Reds boss has brought in Estonian defender Ragnar Klavan from Augsburg for €5million earlier this month.
