Retired FIFA referee; Joseph Wellington has explained that, Ghana referees are happy when they are not paid several months since they [the referees] dislike match-after-match payments.
The Vice Chairman of the Referees Appointment Committee stated on Happy FM that, the referees wish to accumulate a sum of money and as a result, they prefer their allowances after matches, pile up.
“each referee receives over five million [GHC 500] per match as an allowance; so when he officiates three or four matches in a month, he is well off.” He stated.
According to Wellington; aside refereeing, all the referees are working and so therefore, they sees refereeing as a part-time job.
“the referees do not depend solely on officiating monies for survival, ninety percent (90%) of them [referees] are teachers, some are directors of education, bankers and poultry farmers; they only consider refereeing as a hobby.” He added.
