Sports Minister, Nii Lante Vnaderpuye set to call off South Africa friendly match

The Youth and Sports Minister, Nii Lante Vanderpuye has disclosed that the Black Stars friendly match against South Africa will be called off if the Bafana Bafana can’t afford to pay Ghana $500.000 or above.

As part of the preparations to play Egypt in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, the GFA arranged with the South African FA to play a friendly match in Durban before the Black Stars play the Pharaohs of Egypt in Cairo.

Many questions were raised if the ministry is aware of the friendly match and the amount the South Africans is paying the country. There were reports in the media that the South Africans will pay Ghana $150.000 but the Youth and Sports Minister, Nii Lante Vanderpuye says it is either the South Africans FA pays $500.000 or more or the match is called off.

“I received the letter yesterday but there was nothing attached to the contract but we should remember that the Black Stars is a brand and there is no way the team will play a match without getting any profit whiles we need money to fund their next game.” Nii Lante told Kumasi based Nhyira FM.

“Hosting the Ugandans only has cost the country $600.000 so if a country wants to play he Black Stars in friendly match I am expecting nothing not less than the $500.000. When the contract was submitted to me, there were no indications on how much they will pay the country so I am not ready to approve that match unless the terms of the contract are revealed.

“The management of the ministry has decided that the country will not receive anything less than $500.000 if a country wants to play the Black Stars in friendly match and the issue of paying the Black Stars $150.000 will be a thing of the past because the players playing for the team are not cheap players.

He continued, “Cameroon is receiving close to $1.000.000 when they play a friendly a match so there is no way we will accept the $150.000 again. Our players are better than the Cameroonian players so how come the Cameroonians will be paid that huge amount of money and we will be given that small amount so I am saying that if the South Africans are not ready to pay us $500.000 in friendly match, I will call off the match because we are not cheap.

“If you weigh our players, I don’t think any African country has those kind of players so if you want to play Ghana, you must be able to pay that money because your country wants to see Dede Ayew, Asamoah Gyan, Kwadwo Asamoah so South Africa playing Ghana in friendly match, it is either they pay us $500.000 or more or the match is called off.

Quizzed if the Black Stars bonus has changed, he said, “The situation is that, the bonus of the Black Stars has not changed. It is still $8.000.
