Head coach of the Black Stars, Avram Grant has urged Ghanaian locally based players to forget about playing for the national team under his auspices as the head coach of the team.
After Liberty Professionals Latif Blessing was crowned best players of the 2015/16 Ghana Premier League and winning the top scorer of the season, many urged Avram Grant to give a chance to the skillful midfielder to play for the team after exhibiting an impressive soccer last season.
Premier League Champions, Wa All Stars goalkeeper Richard Ofori was the only local player that made cut to the 26 man provisional squad but insisted that he was tasked to select players all over the world and was not asked to reserve a slot for locally based players.
Speaking to the press, he said, “I was asked to name Ghanaian players for the AFCON and wasn’t asked to name them per the leagues they play. I pick players based on their commitment and desire to play for the country.
“Maybe in the future there will be segmentation in call ups to pick 5 local players,6 Europeans and e.t.c. but not in my time as a coach.” He added.
The team will begin an 11-day training tour in the UAE before travelling to Gabon on January 13 for the competition.
